5 mistakes on 80 percent of Dutch hotel websites

5 mistakes on 80 percent of Dutch hotel websites

Most Dutch hotel sites are not ugly. They lose bookings on five points you recognize in an afternoon and fix in a week.

What is going on

A guest who lands on your own site is gold. He has already found you, he is interested, and if he books here you pay no commission. Yet most sites unknowingly send that guest back to Booking.com, because booking is just too complicated here.

It rarely comes down to taste. It comes down to five concrete things that keep coming back.

Mistake 1: no booking button above the fold

Above the fold is everything the visitor sees without scrolling. On many sites, there is an atmosphere photo and welcome text there, but no button to book. The guest has to search, and searching costs bookings.

Fix: place a striking button with the text "Check availability" or "Book now" prominently at the top right and again in the first screen. Not in the same color as the rest, but in an accent color that stands out.

Mistake 2: the site loads too slowly

A slow site costs you visitors before they have even seen anything. The effect is biggest on mobile, and that is precisely where most of your traffic comes from.

Fix: compress your photos, that is usually the culprit. An image of 4 MB should be 200 to 400 KB. Test your site with a free speed test and tackle the heaviest files first.

Mistake 3: no prices shown

Sites that don't show prices think they stay flexible. In practice, visitors drop out who don't know if you fit their budget. The guest then goes to Booking, where the price is immediately visible.

Fix: show a starting price per room type at minimum. Let the booking engine calculate the exact price per date.

Mistake 4: weak or too few photos

With an accommodation, the image is what sells. Dark, crooked, or outdated photos undersell your rooms. Too few photos leave the guest with questions.

Fix: take at least three photos per room type in daylight, plus images of the common areas, breakfast, and surroundings. Good phone photos in good light are better than expensive photos in bad light.

Mistake 5: no reason to book directly

If your own site has exactly the same price and conditions as Booking.com, why would the guest book with you? Without a benefit he books where he trusts.

Fix: give a small, honest benefit for direct booking. Free cancellation until 24 hours before arrival, a drink on arrival, or a small percentage discount. State it explicitly by the booking button.

The most expensive mistake

Mistake 1 and mistake 5 reinforce each other. A guest who sees no button and has no reason to stay is a guest you hand over for free to Booking.com.

Why these five together make the difference

None of these five mistakes costs you the most bookings on its own. It is the stacking that hurts you. A guest who sees a button but no price hesitates. A guest who sees a price but no reason to book with you compares again on Booking. Each individual mistake leaks a bit, and together they leak most of your direct revenue away.

That is why tinkering with one point rarely works. If you tackle the five together, each fix strengthens the next: the button gets a price, the price gets a reason, the reason gets a fast page to land on. What you can do with this

Walk through your own site once with these five points in mind. Good chance you recognize at least three. The good news: you don't need a new website to fix them.

Start with the basics in what a hotel website minimally needs and then sharpen your booking buttons. Want to know what those extra direct bookings will earn you, calculate it through with the savings calculator. Prefer to have it done? Check out website building.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new website built to fix this?
Usually not. Four of the five mistakes you fix on your existing site: add a booking button, replace photos, show prices, and improve loading speed. Only if your site is really outdated or doesn't work on mobile is a new site the better choice.
What is the most important mistake to fix first?
The missing clear booking button above the fold. That's the mistake that costs direct bookings, because a guest who doesn't immediately see how to book goes back to the platform where that's possible.
How do I know if fixing these mistakes actually brings bookings?
Measure it. Note for a week beforehand how many direct bookings your site brings in, then make the fixes, and compare. The five points together shift 5 to 15 percent of bookings from Booking to your own site for most hotels. At 60 bookings per month at 120 euros each, that quickly saves 500 euros a month in commission.
